Next Adventure

The new “tool” I’d like to look into is through http://secondlife.com  This is an avatar/interactive site that can and has been used alot in medical and nursing settings.  It is very similar to playing a video game where you choose your character and then proceed through the game.  In terms of nursing/medical use it can be used for students to walk through scenarios that they may come across and then they have to react to what is going on with the patient.  Never thought technology would come to this!!!

Content/Survey and Diigo

Posted on July 28th, 2010 in Uncategorized by suhuschmidt

The content I researched was related to diabetes because this is a topic I teach and wanted to find some new material.  I found some great podcasts at http://www.diabetes.org/  that I will definately use this fall as well as many powerpoint presentations through the center for disease control that I will use, specifically http://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/statistics/slides/maps_diabestesobesity_trends%20.ppt.  And last but not least we signed up at the diigo site but honestly I didn’t use this much because it was just another “tool” and I was honestly overwhelmed by it all.  You can visit my site @ http://www.diigo.com/user/suhuschmidt and see what I have bookmarked.

I created content on prezi.com for an online course segment I am going to be doing this fall.  I had never used prezi before and it was really easy to use and it may definately be something I try instead of powerpoints because the look is much more stimulating for students in class.  My prezi can be seen @http://prezi.com/idowir9ddeni/intro-to-med-surg1-clinical-topics/

I loved using Survey Monkey.  It was my first time creating a survey and I will definately use this again.  I think for me it will be very helpful pre-class to determine where the students are and then again post course to see what needs improvement.  My survey can be seen at http://www.surveymonkey.com/MyCollector_Detail.aspx?sm=PodoBuWcczcvsTwiNxHJ4deGdBxWQiCHFvbPBeXc2h55NiR6QntM3M3%2f5nnbzRsf

Asynchronous communication

Posted on July 28th, 2010 in Uncategorized by suhuschmidt

I opened a twitter account for one of the assignments in this course.  I can be reached via twitter at  http://twitter.com/suhuschmidt   Actually you probably won’t be able to reach me there because I wasn’t a fan of twitter for a variety of reasons.  I couldn’t determine what I thought was worthy of announcing to the world.  When I did think of something worthy, the limited amount you can type made each entry seem unneccesary.

Tools to use

Posted on July 28th, 2010 in Uncategorized by suhuschmidt

I have used Skype for synchronous communication this semester.  My Skype name is SuHuSchmidt.  I enjoyed learning how to use Skype because I plan on “Skyping” with my son who is away in college starting this fall.  I think that this type of communication might be an option for office hours when students really want to “see” me and feel connected.  It might be a good option for when a student is reluctant while in an online class so the can feel more connected to me the instructor.

Finally a list of all that I have used/saw/tried to conquer in the last 8 weeks.  Some items I loved (some I hated) but all were interesting!!
